It’s the season for giving thanks and giving back, and that’s just what Colts Neck Community Church has been doing in recent weeks. Opportunities for growth and mission in the surrounding community are endless, and CNCC has been at the forefront in participating.

A wonderful project volunteers contributed to was rehabilitating Colts Neck’s “Garden for the Blind.” The area was in need of clean up as well replanting and minor repairs. About 20 people came out on a beautiful day Nov. 16 to put in a group effort to get the garden back in shape. From shoveling mulch, to pulling weeds and power washing, the group did their fair share of physical labor.

“It was a great day working hard with other people I had never met before,” said CNCC member Allison Fleck. “We laughed, smiled, kidded around, watched the little kids, thanked God we could be of service and thanked God we were not bored, sad, alone or without purpose.”

More recently, 22 people rose to the challenge of helping those still recovering from Hurricane Sandy by participating in a disaster relief project in Union Beach – an area with families that are still displaced by the storm. The weekend before Thanksgiving, CNCC arrived in Union Beach at 9 a.m. ready to dive into any areas of town that needed assistance. Along with Joe Tamburello from the Gateway Church of Christ Disaster Response Team, CNCC was informed of the areas that needed the most attention and was able to divide forces to complete each task

From painting the inside of the firehouse on Harris Street, to helping with manual labor and demolition work in two residential homes, participants were eager and excited to help. This “labor of love” continued strongly until about 5:30 p.m., fueled by the hopes that some of these families could possibly be back to normal living conditions soon.

“The home that drywall installation was being performed was in its last phases of the rebuild, and it is a reality that this family will be home for the holidays,” said CNCC member Brian Conerty.

CNCC has responded to the families affected by Hurricane Sandy since it occurred. More than a dozen trips were made to the Jersey Shore, including a mission week this past summer.

“Helping our neighbors is a work that we love, and we are called to do by our Lord,” said Conerty.

Furthermore, with the Christmas season fast approaching, CNCC is participating in “Operation Christmas Child – Samaritan’s Purse” to bring joy to boys and girls in over 130 countries by filling a shoebox

with gifts and necessities. The charity has been around since 1993, helping more than 100 million children to experience God’s love through this simple act of generosity. Also, in light of spreading Christmas sprit, CNCC held a successful caroling event at the Brandywine Senior Living center on Dec. 8, singing some favorite Christmas tunes just in time for the holidays.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10).
